Airfest is this weekend at Macdill Air Force Base in South Tampa.  Drivers should expect heavy congestion all day Saturday and Sunday especially along Dale Mabry Highway, Gandy Boulevard, Macdill Avenue, Interbay Boulevard, and Westshore Boulevard.  The Crosstown Expressway will be a good alternate route for drivers trying to access the Gandy Bridge and downtown Tampa.

Crutches for Clicks

It’s going to take months and years to pick up all the pieces in Haiti following January’s devastating earthquake.  This morning, I introduced you to local photographer Jessica Dana who organized “Crutches for Clicks”’ to raise awareness for the ongoing medical needs in that island nation.  It’s a cause close to home for Jessica as her husband is Haitian and her in-laws still live in Haiti.

Jessica will trade a 45-minute photo session for a pair of new or used crutches… hopeful that these donations will be a step in the right direction for the people of Haiti.  Crutches for Clicks runs through the end of March and with this program Jessica will also donate 10% of total sales to purchase medical supplies for Haiti.

More Airline Fees

Listen up air travelers… more fees. Ugh!

Starting February 22nd, American Airlines passengers hoping to fly standby will have to shell out 50 bucks to the gate agent.  The policy will also apply to travelers who want ot switch their flights on the day of travel.

American also announced that on flights over two hours, you’ll have to pay eight dollars for a blanket, which comes with an inflatable pillow.

Have the airlines gone too far?

Taco Bell’s Drive-Thru Diet

Taco Bell’s new Drive-Thru Diet is just one of several popular fast food chain’s “low-calorie” menus.  It includes 7 Fresco taco and burrito options all under 9 grams of fat.
While Taco Bell introduced the Fresco meals nearly two years ago, its new ad featuring a bikini clad spokesmodel is getting the program lots of attention.  She’s a Florida woman who boasts losing 54 pounds while following the Drive-Thru Diet as part of a reduced calorie diet and exercise plan.  Yet Taco Bell specifically cautions the diet in not a weight-loss program making nutritionists question the ethics of their campaign.
I talked with Tampa Dietician Kristie Salzer about the Drive-Thru Diet and what you need to consider if you want to try it.  Bottom line, Salzer liked the menu choices because they are healthier options as compared to Taco Bell’s regular tacos and burritos.  However, she cautions that the single serving size might not be filling.  Salzer suggests choices that include fruits, vegetables and whole grain which can give you more food with the same amount of calories and fat.  For example, McDonald’s has a variety of healthy choices including entrée-sized salads with up to two and a half servings of fruit and vegetables.  Subway’s six-inch turkey sandwich contains just 6 grams of fat but 5 grams of fiber if served on a 9-grain wheat roll.
Also, Salzer cautions to check sodium content if you are prone to high blood pressure or other health concerns and avoid the high-calorie sauces and cheeses.  Finally, before you begin any diet or health plan, consult your physician.

Adult Dental Sealants

Dental sealants can be a great option for children and adults prone to cavities and stains… helping to seal teeth and protect them from decay-causing germs.  While the procedure is routinely performed and insurance-qualified for children, this is not the case for adults.  But one local dentist, who happens to be my dentist and has sealed all of my teeth, says the sealants can be a huge preventative tool for adults who would otherwise suffer from many cavities and dental repairs throughout their life.  To contact Dr. Kalra for more information on adult dental sealants and what you need to ask your dentist if you are considering adult sealants, I have provided contact details below.
